4-6 Day Ride?
Old 07-30-2010, 03:02 AM   #1

We are planning to do a 5 day - ish ride/tour and looking for suggestions on where to go.

We've never been to the Sunshine coast. Or taken the coastal route to Portland.
  • Looking to do 70 to 100km days. Maybe more if we rent a touring tandem and it works nicely for us.
  • Forests and ocean are what we want.
  • We'll be camping and open to a B&B night or two.
  • Prefer very little traffic.
  • Willing to train/bus back.
Also open to a great base campground from which to do recon rides and hikes from.

What have you got?

Had my first taste of touring a couple of months ago with a trip to the Sunshine Coast. Didn't go all that far (about 70km, I think), but there's a really well maintained cyclist campground in Porpoise Bay, just outside of Sechelt. We were told that the roads beyond that point get a little hairy, so we decided to stay there. The traffic wasn't too bad, but it goes down to one narrow lane for a few kms, so keep your head up. Once you're out of Gibsons, there's a point where the main highway meets Lower Road. Take that as far as you can. It's extremely quiet, with a very slight descent the entire way.

Doing the coastal ride down to Portland towards the end of August. Don't know much about the route yet, so if anyone has pointers as to where to stay, what the ride is like, etc, I'd love to hear it.
